As one of the three ancient leaders of the Volturi, Marcus is a bit of a zombie, since not much has excited him in the last century or so. Stephenie Meyer says he lost his mate in battle long ago and remained depressive.

Special ability: He can see relationship ties—not just of the romantic type, but how strong one's devotion is to another. It's an amazing power; he can figure out who would die for another, where one's true loyalties lie, and who are key leaders in battle. Upon seeing the strength of Edward's and Bella's love, he's stirred from his zombie state.
